After sharing our 5 Big Takeaways from the 2024 Gartner Supply Chain Planning Summit, we had thought-provoking conversations with our Executive Advisory Board and the ketteQ team. One thing became clear: the insights we highlighted are not only relevant—they’re crucial for every supply chain leader navigating today’s complexities. Each takeaway sparked deeper discussions, and we quickly realized they deserved more attention than a single post could provide.

This realization led us to create a dedicated five-part blog series, where we’ll dive deeper into each topic, exploring its challenges, opportunities, and solutions. Whether you’re tackling demand volatility, striving for adaptive planning, or rethinking the role of technology in your supply chain, this series is for you.

We begin the series by examining a fundamental shift in leadership: the rise of decision shapers.

Redefining the Role of Supply Chain Leaders

The 2024 Gartner Supply Chain Planning Summit brought together over 1,200 leaders, analysts, and innovators to explore the evolving landscape of supply chain management. One of the most compelling takeaways was the redefinition of supply chain leaders as "decision shapers." This shift reflects the growing complexity of decisions and the critical role supply chain leaders now play in driving organizational success.

In her keynote, Lindsay Azim, Director, Analyst of Supply Chain Sustainability, outlined the changing nature of decision-making.

According to Gartner’s data:

  • 71% of decisions are now more complex.
  • 57% of decisions need to be made faster.
  • 52% of decisions are made more frequently.

These statistics reveal the challenges supply chain leaders face in today’s dynamic environment. Gone are the days when their primary responsibility was ensuring operational smoothness. Instead, they are now tasked with guiding strategic decision-making, often under significant time constraints and with incomplete data.

Azim emphasized that the modern supply chain leader must do more than react to challenges. They need to proactively shape the decision-making process by leveraging intelligent tools and data-driven insights.

"The role of the supply chain leader is no longer to simply ensure the smooth running of operations. They must now be decision shapers, crafting the foundation for decisions that drive organizational success—whether in resilience, sustainability, or profitability," she said.
